Two different constructions hide behind "family KITAS", and it matters not to confuse them. The first is residency through marriage to an Indonesian citizen, where your Indonesian spouse is the sponsor. The second is a dependent permit for the spouse and minor children of someone who holds a KITAS of any type.
The difference is fundamental. Marriage to a citizen gives the most durable status: it is tied to no employer and no company, and after several years it opens the shortest route to permanent KITAP. A dependent permit, by contrast, follows the principal entirely — if their KITAS expires or is cancelled, the dependent one ends with it.
A limitation common to both: neither confers the right to work. A family KITAS permits you to live in the country, not to work for the Indonesian market. Employment needs a separate basis — a work permit through an employer, or your own company.
That is the most frequent source of misunderstanding: people obtain a family KITAS, start taking work on the side, and discover the problem at renewal or during an inspection.

Common questions
Can I work on a family KITAS?
No, it does not confer the right to work. Employment requires a separate basis — a work permit through an employer or your own company. This is the most common misunderstanding about this permit type.
What happens on divorce?
The basis for residency ends with the marriage. Act immediately and change permit type rather than waiting for expiry.
How soon can I get KITAP?
Marriage to an Indonesian citizen gives the shortest route to permanent status. The exact period depends on continuity of residence and is confirmed case by case.
What happens to a dependent KITAS if the principal is cancelled?
The dependent permit ends with the principal one. It does not exist independently.
