Your KITAS is expiring: when to file, and what happens if you are late

The question we are asked most often, and the most expensive mistake available. A gap in status costs more than it looks: it hits not your wallet but the record you have been building for years.

The short answer

Start the renewal a month before expiry, not a week. A KITAS takes one to two months to process, and that timeline does not bend to how urgently you need it: immigration works at its own pace, and the biometrics queue does not move faster for extra money.

If you have less than two weeks left, you are already in the risk zone. It does not mean nothing can be done — it means there are fewer options and some of them cost extra.

Why a gap in status is worse than the fine

The overstay fine is money, and money is predictable. The real cost is elsewhere: continuous residence on a KITAS is what builds your entitlement to permanent KITAP status. A gap resets that, and the years you lived before it stop counting.

Someone who has lived in Bali for three years and missed a month goes back to the start of the count. People usually discover this at the moment they sit down to apply for a KITAP, which is to say when nothing can be fixed.

What to do, step by step

  • Find the expiry date. It is on the KITAS itself and its annex — do not confuse it with the expiry of the visa you entered on
  • Count back one month. That is your deadline to start, not to finish
  • Collect documents early: a passport valid for at least 18 months, sponsor paperwork, proof of address
  • Check whether your basis has changed. New job, closed company, divorce — that is a different KITAS, not a renewal
  • If you are already over, do not wait further. Every day of overstay counts separately

When a renewal is the wrong move

  • Your basis changed: a KITAS is tied to an employer, a company or a marriage, and a change means a new permit
  • Your passport expires before the new KITAS would: replace the passport first
  • You are outside Indonesia and cannot return before the expiry date

What we do

We check your current permit and dates before quoting anything: sometimes it turns out you need a different KITAS rather than a renewal, and it is better to learn that at the start.

We run the filing end to end and remind you about the next expiry in advance — so that you never need this article again.
